Reality revisits a work originally created by Soy Chanborey nearly a decade ago, drawing upon the personal experiences and daily lives of both himself and his father. In this new version, Chanborey retraces their intertwined stories, bringing years of accumulated memories and observations into a fresh creative process.
His father’s life was shaped by the post-Khmer Rouge era in Cambodia, military service, and an incident that resulted in the loss of a leg. These experiences form a complex personal history that Chanborey interprets from the perspective of a son. Their relationship is also framed by cultural beliefs and the ways they make sense of the life events that define their shared experiences.
Through the use of movement, video, photography, music, and sound, Chanborey explores everyday gestures and activities, connecting various moments in the lives of father and son. This process allows him to experiment with how physical movement, visual imagery, and sound can carry personal history across different timeframes and perspectives.
By revisiting Reality from a contemporary standpoint, Chanborey views the work as an ongoing exploration—revisiting familiar material while opening up space for new artistic possibilities and a deeper narrative regarding the father-son relationship.
This work was made possible, in part, through the support of the Indonesian Dance Festival and in collaboration with Cambodian Living Arts (CLA).
