Fragile, dented, yet always noisy—KALENG ROMBENG! celebrates vulnerability, memory, and lived experience from a marginalized perspective. The work stems from Adrian’s personal recollections of fear, stereotypes, and experiences that leave invisible marks. Much like a battered tin can, the body retains traces that never fully vanish; they evolve and resurface when confronted with the realities of the present.
With the use of “Waacking+” as an approach, Adrian fuses and shifts the fundamental elements of Waacking—gestures, dynamics, poses, and rhythms—with keywords drawn from personal memory to navigate a spectrum of emotions often avoided. Fear is a recurring theme. The work engages in a dialogue with it, exploring the boundaries between one’s personal safe space and the often-skewed demands of an ideal work-life balance.
Through movement, sound, satirical humor, and narrative play, the body tests limits while simultaneously reclaiming space. Rather than putting aside vulnerability, KALENG ROMBENG! seeks a way to coexist with it—embracing the fragile parts of the self while remaining vocal, and “fighting with joy.”
This work was made possible, in part, through the support of the Indonesian Dance Festival and in collaboration with the Jakarta International Contemporary Dance Festival 2026, a program of the Jakarta Arts Institute.
