Hartati started her dance career in 1988. She dedicated 20 years of her journey by joining Gumarang Sakti Dance co, initiated by the late Gusmiati Suid. In 2001, she began to build a career as a choreographer by performing solo works at various festivals, as well as through grants she received, among others from Kelola Foundation and the Asia Culture Council. In 2020, she formed the Indonesian Dance Arts Foundation. In the same year she received Anugerah Kebudayaan from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture (now Kemendikbudristek) in the category of Creator, Pioneer, and Reformer. In 2021, she initiated MenTARI festival to support the process of creating among choreographers in West Sumatra.
