New Fieldwork is a project that begins with observing pigeons living close to people. Through this project, we explore the relationship between humans and other living beings in cities. The project is carried out by artists, including actors, dancers, and theater practitioners, who are not professional field researchers.

This is not academic research. We approach fieldwork as an experimental creative practice. We visit the same places many times and observe individual pigeons. We try to learn about their lives and personalities. Through this process, we hope to develop a way of seeing other living beings as individual beings, each with their own lives and characteristics.

We also want to learn about the communities pigeons belong to and the cultures that develop within these communities. This may help us see familiar places from new perspectives, beyond the human view.

Our observations have been shared through exhibitions and Pigeon Observation Tours. We have also created and distributed maps that explore a theater site from the perspective of pigeons. The project is currently exploring its potential as a performing arts work.

This work was made possible, in part, through the support of the Indonesian Dance Festival and in collaboration with Shifting Points, a program of Kyoto Experiment, Bangkok International Performing Arts Meeting and the Japan Foundation.
