This session delves into the concept of dance as a living archive, exploring how bodies, movement practices, memories, and relationships serve as dynamic repositories of knowledge beyond conventional documentation. As a continuation of the collaboration between the Indonesian Dance Festival, Tanztriennale, and the Goethe-Institut, the discussion builds on shared research around ‘Dancing with Archive’ (Embodied archive).

Speakers will examine what kinds of knowledge are preserved within the body and how this heritage is transmitted across generations, particularly highlighting the undocumented memories of dance communities. Crucially, the conversation will address how different cultural and historical contexts shape archival priorities and political narratives of preservation. By reframing the archive not as a passive record of the past but as an active resource for the future, this session investigates whose dance histories we carry and how they can inspire contemporary artistic practice.

This work is a continuation of the collaboration between Indonesian Dance festival and Tanztriennale, building on shared interest in research around Dancing with Archive (Embodied archive).
