SUMMARY:An Introduction to Menstruation Sumo Dance
DESCRIPTION:Team Chiipro’s Menstruation Sumo Dance explores the social contexts of menstruation through shiko\, the traditional stomping movement in sumo. \nIn this workshop\, participants will be introduced to basic dance practices inspired by shiko and invited to engage in a central part of the work’s creative process: reading diaries documenting personal experiences of menstruation. Drawing from this practice\, the facilitators will share their exploration of the weight of encountering another person’s experience. Bodies change\, experiences accumulate\, responsibilities and relationships shift\, while work\, economic realities\, family\, care\, mobility\, time\, and energy continually shape how an artist makes and sustains a practice. For women artists\, these negotiations may also be shaped by gendered expectations and conditions. \nHere\, rhythm offers a way of thinking about sustainability beyond uninterrupted productivity: there are times to make\, pause\, return\, change intensity\, or discover different ways of working. Through their distinct experiences\, the conversation asks what becomes visible when we attend to these different rhythms—and how artistic practices\, bodies\, and lives continue to shape one another over time.
