Along with the economic boom in Indonesia in the 1970s, the New Order government programmed a compulsory gymnastics exercise regimen for school students and civil servants. It began with the Indonesian Morning Gymnastics (Senam Pagi Indonesia) that changed to the Physical Health Gymnastics (Senam Kesehatan Jasmani) which lasted until the mid-1990s. The choreography of the gymnastics was designed by the central government and spread throughout the country to prepare a society with a healthy body in welcoming the country’s development. The Gymnastik Emporium team sees this program as a cultural tool of the New Order government to construct Suharto’s authoritarian government version of Indonesian values in the bodies of students and state apparatus. Physical Diversity Gymnastics (Senam Keragaman Jasmani) 2020 is a parody of optimistic bodies à la the New Order government, a production of work that stands between dance and gymnastics.
