DESCRIPTION:This Masterclass introduces the core principles of Taiji Quan and their creative application in the performing arts. We will practice a set of physical principles relating to breathing patterns and the merging of opposing poles such as in-out\, open-close\, gather-disperse. These physical principles are then experimented as choreographic dialogues of the body-mind-unit with the time-space-whole. Such operations are at the core of “Abstract Dramaturgy”\, a continuously evolving set of structural and choreographic processes in which the word ‘abstract’ is used here as a verb – in that dancing is underscored as a live negotiation between Self and Otherness\, between Figure and Ground. SUMMARY:E-PAL (GAME\, DANCE\, OR SPORT?)
DESCRIPTION:The game Gobak Sodor and Bentengan is a collective childhood memory. Not only does it recall fun memories\, this game also activates a crucial bodily process. Think of the play area as a space that regulates the intensity of your body\, entering it means activating “standby mode” and exiting means “neutral mode”. During play\, children are in “standby mode”. Their bodies are controlled by instincts that are spontaneous\, constantly moving in response to the situation and opponents\, ready to set strategies and achieve victory. In this game\, the player’s movements look like part of an unplanned choreography\, where spontaneity is the most relevant strategy for mastering space. \nMeanwhile nowadays\, the switch in function of public space and the massive use of electronic devices have impacted how children play. The tradition of children’s games\, along with all the experiences attached to them\, have changed. “E-PAL” is a choreography project that adopts the concept of the body in the children’s play arena. SUMMARY:Body Tarekat
DESCRIPTION:“Body Tarekat” is a solo performance that both builds on and departs from physical practices while doing “tarekat”\, specifically the Qadriyah tarekat* from Aceh. Tarekat\, in general context\, is a method or path to get closer to The Almighty by praising his name. For the choreographer\, tarekat is life\, a way to perceive life and existence itself. \nResearch and experiments for this work started in 2019 and continues to evolve to the present day. As someone who does “tarekat” frequently\, the artist wishes to redefine this practice and its relation to the attainment of The Divine Consciousness in both cultural and choreographic realities. Connectedness is one of the most important aspects in the “Body Tarekat”. This work in particular illustrates several key points of connection\, including the dancer’s interconnectedness to his body\, heart\, and mind; the connection between the dancer and the audience; and the connection between individuals – the dancer and people in the audience – with space and time. \nConcept & Choreographer: M. DESCRIPTION:“Paradox” departs from the artist’s research about dream and its relation to the body. How the conscience and the unconsciousness take over the body in turn\, like two separate entities that create a whole being. A person lives in their consciousness\, but only in the unconscious\, everything that is in you – memories\, wounds\, ambitions\, unfinished things – is unearthed. DESCRIPTION:WARNING :\n– Limited to 12 years and over.\n– The performance includes Strobe Lighting\, Haze Effects\, and Loud Sound that may prove disturbing to some members of the audience.Reality has always been augmented—by the limits of our human perception. “Sky Blue Mythic” sees the body alienated\, and the alien embodied. Worlds loom\, times loop\, gestures distill and meanings distort. \n“Sky Blue Mythic” approaches dance as a non-human entity—existing on timescales longer than our cultural narratives\, in spaces beyond the locality of the body\, and forms unknowable to human-centric sensing—as a method towards opening ways to know dance\, the body\, and time\, differently. It imagines gestures as symbols that can translate\, morph and stretch meaning across times\, dimensions\, and worlds. SUMMARY:Curators’ Meet Up
DESCRIPTION:The term “curator” was used for the first time at an IDF 2014 event with the edition theme being EXPANDED. However\, this does not mean that there was no curatorial practice before then\, only that the inner workings and the title were different\, for example head of the events sector (IDF period 1992-1993) and artistic board (period 1994-2014). The important thing to note from IDF’s curatorial practice is the collaborative approach that involves several people. This allows IDF’s artistic vision to be built and realized through various perspectives. \nIn 2022\, IDF will work with six curators across generations and countries to develop and reiterate the theme RASA: Beyond Bodies into all the elements of the festival. DESCRIPTION:The work “SILO” explores the Islamic custom of tahlil\, in this context seen as the central motoric movement around the torso. The work is a vertical dialogue method between him and the Holy One through repetitive and personal movements. This work is developed from his previous work “SILA”\, which was created during Ghulur’s residency at American Dance Festival. SUMMARY:Vasana Tari 2022
DESCRIPTION:This archive exhibition offers a perspective to see IDF beyond its role as a supporter in dance work productions\, dance events\, or the Indonesian contemporary dance market\, but as a discourse site where we get to understand parts of Indonesian dance history\, in its relations with the dynamics beyond the local dance scene that affects it. Through this perspective\, IDF’s position as a force that shapes dance system will be shifted to the dance system component that is partly choreographed by the socio-political dynamics that surround it. DESCRIPTION:Why does it matter to talk about “rasa”? The word “rasa” is often associated with the sensory experience\, the emotional aspect that is the opposite of the logical. This association often makes “rasa” only seen on the surface\, even causes misconception. \nThrough reflection and research\, IDF 2022 curatorial team reinterprets “rasa”\, while exploring its conceptual footprints from different cultural experiences. This effort is intended to offer alternative perspectives on “rasa.” This dialogue opens up opportunities for the audience to peek into IDF’s curatorial behind-the-scenes alongside four speakers involved in the formulation of RASA: Beyond Bodies\, the festival theme for 2022. \nIndian director Sankar Venkateswaran will reflect on “rasa” in his home culture. So she sends the hero his inner beast\, full of all the fears\, doubts\, anxieties the hero must dwell with in order to get into harmony and merge completely with the proposed space and circumstances\, to become one with himself.  A hero is a hero for that – he accepts his beast and looks directly into his eyes. Going up to a new level\, where there is no place for fears\, doubts and mistrust. Protection and nurturing of nature is perfectly institutionalised\, even in heroic ways of cultural taboos and cult restrictions to not disturb nature. The tradition of nurturing such relationships also exists within other societies in Timor land. Alas\, humans as children have lied to nature\, their mother. DESCRIPTION:“Taulang” (meaning “repeated”) is a reading of a figure that has been verbally abused since childhood\, in what should be the safest space – home. It often happens in the relationship between parents and children\, but awareness is often absent within such a relationship. \n“Children must be fiercely educated. Otherwise\, they will grow up brazen”. That is one of the principles imprinted in parenting among the Moluccas. Unfortunately\, it could result in normalisation towards violence against children. Some parents even admit to calling their children stupid\, lazy\, or rude as a form of motivation\, not hate speech. DESCRIPTION:What happens if a device becomes our external organ? \n“Cyborg” explores the dependent relationship between the body and technology. This dependency starts from the conscious process of downloading the program into the human body. In this process\, the hardware synchronises with the body\, while the software connects to the mind. Originally. as a multicellular being\, human then turns into a multi-pixel being. \nThis pixelization changes relationships and social orders. The artwork creator postulates that interactions\, intimate relationships\, even casual relations between individuals as they become biased and artificial.
